Planning: Issue 1 front cover

Research: positioning of Barcodes on front covers

I am unsure on where to place the barcodes on my magazine front cover, so I have conducted some research on where they usually go.
Based on this the barcode should go in the bottom left corner.

Research: Mastheads

I want my masthead to stand out, but I also want this to be the start of a recognizable start of a brand. The following are examples of TV and Film mastheads that I may or may not take inspiration from:
I don't like the red empire mastheads as it is a dominant colour and will take the reader's attention away from the main feature. However, I do need to find a masthead that is in the middle ground, one that catches the readers eye, but not to much that it diverts the readers eye away from the main feature. In my opinion, the Jade Screen masthead is a bit old fashioned and doesn't look modern enough to be my masthead. I do like the colour of the studio but it is too thin. Perhaps i could take inspiration from the colours and make it thicker.

Research: Contents pages

For my film and TV magazine, my contents page needs to adhere to the conventions of a film and TV magazines contents page.
I have taken liking to Empire magazine's contents pages as at first glance they look basic but are actually rather complicated

For example, this contents page features a recognisable face with the image aligned right and the page numbers to the left. I like this because it is simple yet elegant. It features 7 articles on the contents page.
Another example is this contents from empire. In this one there is more articles. 9 in total. This one also features a series "collect them all1! Or all the other kids will laugh at you." This suggests that Empire knows the target audience of The Lord of the Rings as young people who are easily influenced by the people around them.
This one is different compared to the other as the features are in two columns along the bottom of the screen rather than in one column down the side.

Research: How will I appeal to both genders?

In my opinion, the photographs I have taken so far will help me attract more female viewers than male ones. I did this on purpose because my market research survey indicated that females read more magazines than male. For example, these two photos will attract a higher female demographic than male demographic:

As my magazine is a TV magazine, I was planning to caption the photo with the model with the henna on "She's FINALLY going to the wedding!" Indicating that there is an ongoing storyline an India based TV drama. This will help to increase the female demographic as females are more likely to watch a show like that.

In terms of the second photo, I was planning on captioning it "meet the new contestant on Love Island! This will help to increase the female demographic as the audience of Love Island is predominantly female. However, it will also help to improve the male demographic as it is a voyeuristic photo of a young lady.

Which is why, in my opinion, it's going to be more difficult to increase the male demographic rather than the female demographic. However, I do have photos that would adhere to a male demographic, for example:
This photo will increase the male readership as I was planning on captioning it "The young Peaky Blinders?" Simultaneously capitalising on the predominantly male audience of Peaky Blinders, and the social trend of Peaky Blinders given the fact that the new season is on now.

Evaluation of Summer photography

This photo was taken at a close family wedding. I thought I could use it as a possible front cover or contents as it is a diverse representation and plays into David Gauntlett's "Diversity in representations" theory. I also got two comments on flickr stating that the photo captures "beautiful aspects of the culture." I took this photo to create the representation of a heartwarming female and perhaps to make he audiences empathy for her as she looks upset hence why she has her eyes closed.

I didn't get any comments on this photo but I really like the way the henna stands out on the models hand/wrist. This also plays into David Gauntlett's diversity in representations theory. I took this photo to crate the representation of a asian lady to capitalise on the asian market and have more diversity in representations. She has her eyes closed to show the camera that she is feeling down and upset but also to show off her beautiful eye make up.

I took this photo because I was going for a Love Island type photo and was going to use the caption "Meet the new contestant on Love Island!" This plays on the fact that Love Island is an extremely trending topic for the ages of the TA (16-25.) This could also link to Jenkins' theory on fandom. In terms of the technicality of the photograph, I really like the depth of field and how the way the model is walking matches the way they walk on Love Island. I also like the way the colour of the swimsuit is bright which matches the weather when this photo was taken, as you can see in the photo.
This photo is similar to the previous one, in the way that I took the photo with the same idea in mind as the one before. However, I do like the fact that the model is doing the exact same pose they do on Love Island when they take photos. I also think the depth of field in this photo is very good.

This photo could possibly go on my website as it has a brick wall in the background which could be an alternative representation considering the fact that the other photos are with female models and bright backgrounds. This could fit the TA as I had an idea to launch a new Peaky Blinders esque show as this plays on the social trend of Peaky Blinders right now. The low angle shot creates a representation of the boys being powerful and dangerous and the brick wall creates the representation that they are from a rough background.
This photo was taken with the thought that it would create the representation that the two models who are standing face to face are at odds with each other and the model leaning against the wall is torn as to what side he should be on.

Planning: Summer Photography update

I am glad to write that I have been able to make a lot of progress when it comes to bringing people together for my summer photography work.
I am going to a family wedding in the coming days, which allows me to get some shots of my sister in her Indian sari which would be a magnificent opportunity to bring in some ethnic diversity.
I have also managed to gather my friends for a photo shoot as I had an idea to launch a new peaky blinders esque show
I also managed to get some spontaneous photographs of my friend in her bikini whilst we were sunbathing. I will use these as the front cover with the caption "meet the new contestant on Love Island!"

planning: Summer photography

Getting lots of different people together in one place over the summer has been difficult. I have been trying to get people together from the start of the summer holidays to now and I have been unable to. However, I will keep persevering and hopefully manage to get some photographs.

Research: Empire website

The Empire website also appears to adhere to a lot of conventions. For example, a voyeuristic picture of a female to attract the readers attention. Followed up by a question to engage the readers in debate. It also adheres to a number of magazine website conventions, for example the hyper links at the top of the page and a call to action with "subscribe."

This part of the website also adheres to a number of website conventions. For example, as Empire is a film magazine, it has reviews of the latest films in a star form along with a "what to watch" segment
Another convention the Empire website adheres to is having their social media links at the bottom of the page. This increases reader interaction because if someone really likes Empire magazine, they can follow their social media accounts.

Research: Empire contents page

The contents page is similar to the front cover in that it relies heavily on Game of Thrones fandom along with some other fandom based things i.e Hellboy etc. The contents page also links to Jenkins' fan theory due to the amount of Game of Thrones things it has on there. However, it does adhere to many more conventions than the front cover.  For example, it is in columns, a long time convention of entertainment magazines

Research: Empire front cover

This front cover breaks conventions of magazine front cover as there is no bar code, price or anything of the sort. It relies entirely upon the fandom of Game of Thrones and the fact that it has built up an audience who trusts them. This would not be a first edition because the audience would not know what type or even what the magazine is. However, due to the fact that Empire has an audience who trusts them and knows the pragmatics of Empire. Also, the fact that Empire understands that Game of Thrones has a very loyal and devoted fan base plays into the theory by Jenkins about fandom. I would not be able to do something like this as its a first issue and the audience would not have the pragmatic understanding of what the magazine is.

Research 2: Researching the TA

Researching the target audience

In the survey I conducted, I had 46 respondents, each of them giving useful answers. The chart shown shows each the magazine that each gender would be interested in the most, this will tell me which areas the people in my TA age range are interested in the most.

Although, the results for fashion, gossip/celebrity and beauty were high among females, I have decided to move away from that path as I don't believe I have a sufficient amount of knowledge to be able to do that category justice.
For this reason, I have decided to make my magazine film and TV as not only am I interested in these things and have a sufficient amount of knowledge to do them justice, the results also back this up as 12 females and 6 males picked music, and 12 males and 2 females picked sports.Obviously there will be sub genres in both categories which will please both genders. E.g crime dramas and sports shows (predominately male viewers) and Reality TV (predominantly female listeners). Hopefully this should allow me to make a sophisticated magazine which pleases everyone in the target audience.

Research post 3: Hearst Magazines UK

Magazines they distribute:

If you were to click on Digital Spy it would tell you all about their magazine and the statistics about the readership. For example, it has 28 million global monthly users, 600,000 registered users and a 50:50 split in terms of male and female readers. The website is quite basic and simple and easy to get to he magazines you want to get to. This may be because most of the target audience for their magazines are in the older age rang and they know that the older generation struggle with he internet.

History of BBC Radio 1 Breakfast show

The Radio 1 Breakfast Show. Radio 1 Breakfast is a radio show that is broadcast across the UK from 6:30am to 10am, Monday to Thursday. The show is the most listened to broadcast on BBC Radio 1. It is hosted by Greg James who took over from Nick Grimshaw on 20 August 2018 as the show's 16th presenter.
Other names: Radio 1 Breakfast with Greg James
Hosted by: Greg James
Running time: 210 minutes (6:30 am–10:00 am)
Original release: 30 September 1967 – present

The first breakfast show presenter was Tony Blackburn, who spoke the first words on Radio 1 and remained in the slot for nearly six years. Other DJs who have hosted the breakfast show for more than five years are former host Nick Grimshaw, Mike Read, Simon Mayo and Chris Moyles. Moyles is the longest-serving Radio 1 breakfast show presenter, having hosted The Chris Moyles Show for eight-and-a-half years.

Nick Grimshaw (2012–2018)

Nick Grimshaw replaced Moyles as host of the breakfast show on 24 September 2012. Features include Call or Delete – a game carried on from his previous show on Radio 1, where celebrity guests choose to either prank call a contact on their phone or delete their number altogether. Other segments include The Nixtape – which sees Grimshaw select 30 minutes of party-oriented music before a DJ comes in to mix listener requests to close the week, Happy Monday, a half-hour of uplifting songs on Monday mornings, Showquizness, an irreverent daily quiz based around pop culture, Happy Hardcore FM, which sees listeners phone into the show to scream over happy hardcore beats, and the daily Waking Up Song, which features celebrities encouraging listeners to get out of bed to the sound of Pharoahe Monch. Grimshaw's incarnation of the breakfast show has received strong critical reviews through his tenure but has polarised public opinion, which is reflected in the show's often fluctuating listening figures – in February 2015, the show had 5.9 million listeners, with a small increase in listenership of 100,000. On 26 October 2017, it was reported that the show recorded 4.93 million weekly listeners between July and September – down from 5.5 million last quarter, a record low. The Newsbeat news and sport bulletins are presented by Tina Daheley at 6:30, 7:00, 7:30, 8:00, 8:30 and 9:30; there is also entertainment news from Sinead Garven at approximately 7:45 each morning.

Greg James (2018–present)

Greg James began his tenure as host of the breakfast show on 20 August 2018. Roisin Hastie reads the bulletins for Newsbeat every half-hour except at 09:00. Features include Yesterday’s Quiz and the Ten Minute Takeover, alongside Game of Phones and Unpopular Opinions.
