Research: Contents pages

For my film and TV magazine, my contents page needs to adhere to the conventions of a film and TV magazines contents page.
I have taken liking to Empire magazine's contents pages as at first glance they look basic but are actually rather complicated

For example, this contents page features a recognisable face with the image aligned right and the page numbers to the left. I like this because it is simple yet elegant. It features 7 articles on the contents page.
Another example is this contents from empire. In this one there is more articles. 9 in total. This one also features a series "collect them all1! Or all the other kids will laugh at you." This suggests that Empire knows the target audience of The Lord of the Rings as young people who are easily influenced by the people around them.
This one is different compared to the other as the features are in two columns along the bottom of the screen rather than in one column down the side.
